Le CafÉ Joinville, France

Painted Panels in an Art Déco Style

These panels were designed to merge into the Art Déco ambience of this suburban café near the Bois de Vincennes. Painted in the studio, the completed canvas was then taken to the site to be installed, after the other trades had finished their work. The technique used was to paste the canvas into position on the wooden frames. 'Marouflage', is the word the French use for this technique, it's rather similar to pasting heavy wall paper. The decoration was finished with a cloud effect on the ceiling, then all the panel decoration was protected by varnish.
